Position Summary:

The primary responsibility for the Fluid Power Controls Engineer is providing the design, development, maintenance, documentation and troubleshooting for pneumatic, hydraulic, lubrication and coolant control systems for gear manufacturing machines.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide all aspects of engineering for the pneumatic and hydraulic control systems for multi-axes gear manufacturing machines.
  • Design, development, maintenance, documentation and troubleshooting of gear manufacturing machines.
  • Work with other engineering groups (Electrical Controls, Mechanical, Software and Applications Engineering) to facilitate a Systems Engineering approach to machine design.
  • Work with Proposals and Sales to understand Customer Specifications and applicable Safety Standards to develop machine cost and schedule estimates.
  • Use EPLAN for system Schematics and BOM creation.
  • Use Creo for 3D modeling of components and systems.
  • Maintain Schematic Masters and Master BOMs for current and legacy machines.
  • Provide custom designs for Fluid Power Control Systems including appropriately sizing components.
  • Ensure unique Customer Specifications are incorporated into each design.
  • Based on the region of the customer, ensure all applicable US or International Safety Standards and Design Standards (ie: ANSI, ISO/TC 131) are incorporated into the design.
  • Develop fluid power systems with suppliers such as Hoffmann, Parker, Rexroth and/or any of a multitude of fluid power suppliers.
  • Provide part specification changes (Engineering Change Order) based on customer interactions.
  • Interface with Assembly Methods to apply the appropriate part coding and documentation to facilitate efficient machine assembly.
  • Prioritizes and addresses engineering issues in a timely manner from Assembly, Runoff, Field Service or Supply Chain.
  • Facilitates Design Reviews, FMEAs and Risk Management meetings by coordinating the meeting, recording/ publishing meeting minutes, formalizing documents, and driving the completion of open action items.
  • Responds to internal and external requests for information.
  • Work in fast paced environment.
  • Participate in Process Improvement efforts that identify deficiencies in Fluids Power Engineering and systematically develop solutions.
  • Follow, improve and create Work Instructions that document Fluid Power Controls Engineering processes.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

Business System Skills

  • Creates material masters for purchased and manufactured components
  • Team with Project Management and the Customer to develop ETO's (Engineer to Order) and incorporate them into the design
  • Review machine BOM and parts availability
  • Familiar with SAP or similar data management system for business
    • Tasks will include creating and maintaining BOMs and material masters

Design Skills

  • Proven ability to design Fluid Control Systems
  • Proven ability to size and specify controls components for optimum performance, safety, longevity, and value
  • Proven ability in some, if not all, of the following:
    • design custom pneumatic, hydraulic, lubrication and coolant control systems
      • familiarity with piping and hosing
    • application of seals, material compatibility, and lubrication principles
    • knowledge, selection and application of coolant chiller systems
    • design safety circuits to an appropriate level of performance
    • US and international Fluid Power design standards and safety standards (NFPA, IEC, etc)

Other Technical Skills

  • Proven ability to:
    • debug and resolve Fluid Power Controls Systems
    • read and understand Electrical Schematics and Mechanical drawings
    • develop and maintain part numbers and BOMs

Communication Skills

  • Proven ability to:
    • Communicate technical information effectively with other functional engineering areas and other downstream and upstream departments within the plant
    • communicate effectively verbally, in various electronic formats and in writing to specific audiences
    • prepare written reports
    • give verbal presentations
    • use good judgment regarding the timeliness of communications and responses
  • Ability to work with other disciplines (Technicians, Runoff Operators, Field Service, etc.)

Time Management skills

  • Ability to manage workload effectively, to plan, organize, and prioritize work and meet deadlines

Project Management skills

  • Proven ability to manage details of technical requirements including task assignments, tracking, and communications

Manage multiple projects at once while maintaining project cost and schedule constraints

Preferred Education/Training/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 3-8 years’ experience. Hydraulic or Fluid Power Engineering or other Engineering degree with at least one year of Fluid Power Design Experience desired.
