Description This is a skilled trade’s work position responsible for efficient and workmanlike performance of mechanical repairs and maintenance on a variety of light automotive equipment. General instructions are received regarding what work is to be done, permitting the employee discretion in planning the technical details of the projects. Detailed instructions are received for new or difficult assignments. This employee assists less experienced mechanics with complex assignments. Work is reviewed by the supervisor. Related work is performed as required.

"CITY RESIDENCY PREFERRED"

  • Performs general maintenance and skilled repairs on light trucks, automobiles, motorcycles, and other light duty automotive equipment;
  • Inspects equipment for worn, damaged or defective parts using visual evaluation, road tests, or testing equipment and recommends needed repairs;
  • Disassembles, repairs and adjusts front and rear axle assemblies, main drive shaft, transfer case, clutch and transmission;
  • Rebuilds or replaces defective or damaged subassemblies;
  • Makes repairs such as refacing and reseating valves, taking up or replacing main and connecting rods and rebuilding damaged parts;
  • Fits and replaces cylinder sleeves and pistons;
  • Leads a team of mechanics on complex repair jobs;
  • Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
  • Adjusts brakes and fuel systems;
  • Repairs ignition and electrical systems;
  • Performs N.Y.S. authorized inspections on light duty vehicles;
  • Tests automotive computer systems using electronic equipment.
High school diploma or G.E.D.*, AND:
  1. Three (3) years of experience as an automotive mechanic in a standard repair shop;     OR
  2. Associate's degree in Automotive Technology or a closely related area, and two (2) years of experience as described in 1. above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Possession of a valid NYS Class D Operator's license at time of appointment;
  2. Must provide proper selection of tools necessary to make repairs to light duty vehicles at time of appointment (i.e., socket set, open end wrenches, screwdrivers, metric tools, test light, tool box, etc.);
  3. Possession of N.Y.S. Motor Vehicle Inspector's license six (6) months after date of appointment.

*Where diploma or G.E.D is lacking, work experience demonstrating reading, writing, and arithmetic skills may be substituted on a year-for-year, case-by-case basis.
