Job Summary

The Commercial Food Service Repair Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining commercial kitchen equipment used in restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, and other foodservice establishments. They ensure that all equipment operates efficiently, adheres to safety standards, and minimizes downtime. Additionally, they manage external vendor relationships for repairs beyond their scope.

Job Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and Troubleshoot Equipment Issues
    • Inspect malfunctioning equipment to identify the root cause of issues.
    • Use diagnostic tools and technical manuals to troubleshoot problems.
    • Determine whether repairs can be done on-site or if equipment needs to be taken to a workshop.
  • Repair and Maintain Equipment
    • Perform repairs on a variety of foodservice equipment, including ovens, grills, fryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and coffee machines.
    • Replace faulty parts, such as motors, heating elements, thermostats, and electrical components.
    • Ensure equipment complies with safety regulations and manufacturer specifications.
  • Preventive Maintenance
    • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for all foodservice equipment.
    • Clean, lubricate, and adjust equipment to prevent breakdowns.
    • Keep detailed records of maintenance tasks performed.
  • Vendor Management
    • Coordinate with external vendors for specialized repairs or equipment servicing.
    • Maintain positive relationships with vendors and negotiate service contracts when necessary.
    • Provide access/escort to assigned areas for contract work while units are occupied as needed.
  • Facilities Maintenance
    • Manage all aspects of assigned projects through to completion.
    • Comply with OSHA, NYS Building Codes, EPA and DEC requirements and maintain required records.
    • Understand MSDS sheets and safe work practices.
    • Follow through to completion ongoing preventative maintenance/custodial tasks as assigned by Supervisor.
    • Monitor and update assigned work orders through the online Management System.
    • Participate in rotational On-Call Mechanic schedule to respond to service calls received after normal business hours and weekends.
  • OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

Required Qualifications

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant technical training or certification
  • Experience in repairing commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with clients.
  • Possess or be willing to obtain in 6-12 months Certification for Handling Universal Refrigerant:
  • Willingness to obtain training on specific brands of food service equipment used at the university
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 pounds).
  • Comfortable working in tight spaces (e.g., under counters, inside ovens).
Work Environment:
  • Fieldwork: On-site repairs at various foodservice establishments.
May involve exposure to heat, cold, and noisy kitchen environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, Kronos, Starez, Oracle, Lenel, Outlook or similar technical systems.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be able to effectively prioritize work demands, handle multiple tasks simultaneously; work independently and with attention to detail.

Department/College Description

RIT Auxiliary Facilities and Auxiliary Services are responsible for maintaining and repairing the facilities and mechanical systems throughout RIT housing including all facilities within Global Village and other areas within Auxiliary Services and RIT as needed. The primary focus is to accomplish daily work orders, manage custodial tasks, and preventative maintenance tasks in a cost efficient manner while providing support services that exceed our customer's expectations.
