Directs the general accounting activities of the University, including financial reporting, financial asset review and management, account analysis and reconciliation, accounting policy compliance, accounting subsystem overview, and coordination with users of the financial accounting system throughout the University.Responsibilities
Summary:
Serves as a leader of the Strong Memorial Hospital Financial Services Team with direct responsibility for the monthly financial close, reconciliation and reporting processes. Prepares for the Hospital year-end financial statement audit conducted by external auditors while also coordinating audit information needed by University and Medical Center finance offices within established timelines. Partners with senior levels of finance and departmental management to develop strategic operating budgets focused on optimizing business performance.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Statements / Management Reporting:
Coordinates month-end financial close process including review of journal entries, account reconciliations and post-close adjustments
Analyzes monthly draft statements and financial review package for accuracy, explaining significant variances to budget and prior year results
Prepares for meetings with senior financial leaders to review monthly financial performance in relation to volume trends, industry standards and actuarial assumptions
Coordinates the completion of high-level financial and statistical performance summary for review by the Board of Directors
Ensures quarterly reporting requirements for University and Medical Center Finance offices are timely met
External Audit:
Conducts process walkthroughs, internal control procedures and planning analytics with audit team in preparation for year-end test-work
Ensures timely completion of items included in audit request list as performed by multiple parties
Coordinates audit information needed by University and Medical Center Finance offices in a timely manner
Prepares draft financial statements in external audit format, making revisions as necessary based on correspondence with all levels of the audit team
Reviews and prepares required footnote disclosures and assists in completion of disclosure checklists
Operating Budget:
Engages in meetings with Medical Center leadership to understand the organization+s strategic objectives toward achievement of an integrated budget
Assists in translating these goals into a detailed plan, continuing to refine assumptions based on ever-changing information including departmental business improvement opportunities
Coordinates completion of executive presentations to the Board of Directors for final budget approval
Recommends monthly amendments to the budget as necessary based on key variances identified through the financial reporting process
Departmental Support:
Demonstrates a helpful and courteous attitude with departmental representatives, remembering our focus as a service department
Addresses questions and provides guidance to departmental personnel related to financial processes on a daily basis
Supervision:
Supervises team of Analysts daily, managing their performance of assigned tasks while building strong working relationships and maintaining open communications
Serves as a positive role model and motivator while guiding them as needed to manage workload and set priorities
Challenges analysts to think independently and work together and with others to problem-solve
Provides growth opportunities and career planning advice when needed
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor+s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
CPA preferred
At least 7 years of relevant experience and success in managing financial operations, preferably in a healthcare setting
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Proficient in Microsoft Office, primarily Excel
Knowledge of accounting and budgeting software applications
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, contributing to a culture of openness and trust
Detail oriented and well organized
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Multi-tasker, adaptable to changing priorities
