The incumbent in this position provides technical support for software and hardware. An incumbent in this position is responsible for the installation of internal and external personal computer and network hardware. The position is also responsible for analyzing and resolving personal computer and network hardware and software problems. Work may be performed in the office and in the field. A Senior Computer Services Assistant does related work as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Installs personal computer operating systems;
  • Installs software and updates to software and ensures network connectivity;
  • Resolves hardware and software problems (including those with operating systems) and deviations affecting workload and scheduling of personnel;
  • Analyzes problems concerning personal computers and network software and hardware to determine an acceptable solution, and ensures that all applications run properly;
  • Gathers information to respond to basic help-desk questions;
  • Talks to users concerning project status and satisfaction with the project;
  • Sets up, troubleshoots, configures and maintains desktop security of the network and personal computers as well as data storage hardware and software;
  • Diagnoses hardware failures, replacing faulty hardware and/or recommends replacement of parts;
  • Tests network software for compatibility and functionality;
  • Installs internal and external personal computer and network hardware; and
  • Performs other related duties.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of personal computers; knowledge of personal computer and local area network (“LAN”) operating systems; knowledge of the operation of external hardware; ability to operate a personal computer; ability to analyze problems and develop appropriate solutions; ability to understand complex written and oral instructions and technical computer documentation; ability to get along well with others; ability to work independently; ability to work as part of a team; attention to detail; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Typical Qualifications

RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the written test:

  • Livingston County, or
  • One of the following Counties: Allegany, Genesee, Monroe, Ontario, Steuben or Wyoming
Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment:

Training/Education
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree[1] in computer science or a related field.
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
General experience
  • Two years of experience, gained within the past five years, which involved the resolution of software and hardware problems associated with networked computers, networked peripherals and/or network operating systems.
  • Four years of experience, gained within the past five years, which involved the resolution of software and hardware problems associated with networked computers, networked peripherals and/or network operating systems.
Supervisory experience
  • None required.
  • None required.
License/ Certification
  • Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.
  • Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.

Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements.

[1] A higher level degree in the indicated field(s) of study is also acceptable.

Supplemental Information

  1. An appropriate driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.
  2. A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.
  3. Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes.
PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT NOTICE:
An individual who receives a provisional appointment must take the examination for the position title on the next occasion it is offered. In order to be eligible for a permanent appointment to the position, the provisional appointee must pass the exam and be ranked 1, 2, 3, or be tied in score with the individual ranked number 3 of those who are willing to accept appointment to the position. It should be understood that even if the provisional appointee is eligible for appointment, the employer may choose another candidate to fill the position on a permanent basis. Questions regarding provisional appointments should be directed to the Livingston County Human Resources Department.

NOTE: Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position. However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
