Designs, implements and disseminates advanced analytics and data science projects. Works with and advises key stakeholders to provide analysis and insights to enable data-driven decision-making. Supports the development and evolution of advanced statistical and mathematical methods, including machine learning capabilities. Works in partnership with team members to solve complex problems, ensure robust, scalable analytics solutions and implement them efficiently and effectively across the enterprise.Responsibilities
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Quality Reporting and Analytics Improvement Officer within the Quality Institute, the Data Scientist II operates with significant autonomy, exercising independent judgment. The Data Scientist II takes direction from the Quality Assurance, the Value Incubator and Clinical Leadership within the Department of Surgery. Collaborates closely with key members of the Quality Institute to drive data-driven decision-making and deliver impactful results.
Responsibilities include designing, implementing, and disseminating advanced analytics and data science projects. Advises key stakeholders, providing analysis and insights to facilitate data-driven decision-making. Contributes to the development and refinement of advanced statistical and mathematical methods, including machine learning capabilities. Collaborates with team members and ensures the resolution of complex problems and the implementation of robust, scalable analytics solutions across the enterprise.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Leverages data virtualization to build and maintain automated reporting solutions, enabling seamless access, integration, and transformation of data from multiple sources, including independent databases, the university data warehouse, and external data sources.
- Develops clinically meaningful data assets to be used to aid in the evaluation of ongoing projects. Collaborates with IT groups to integrate created data assets into the broader data ecosystem. Thoroughly vets available internal and external data sources for accuracy, completeness, relevance to the project, and integration capability with other institutional data sources.
- Performs analyses of ongoing projects to ensure that targets are being met and to identify areas of opportunity or in need of improvement. Provides results of these analyses to key stakeholders.
- Actively engages with stakeholders, including subject matter experts and cross-functional teams, to develop a deep understanding of their specific needs, challenges, and desired outcomes. Translates these business requirements into well-defined analytical problems, leveraging domain knowledge and expertise in data science techniques.
- Designs and implements interactive data visualizations and dashboards that integrate and present scholarly productivity metrics from diverse data sources, enabling data-driven insights and decision-making to drive progress across various initiatives aligned with the university's overarching strategic objectives.
- Conducts ad hoc analyses as requested by stakeholder(s) that address critical business questions, including determination of project feasibility. Provides recommendations to support these analyses with automation when appropriate. Follows up with stakeholders to ensure understanding of recommendations and conducts additional analysis if requested. Creates dashboards and datasets if recommendation leads to longer term data/analytical need.
- Performs ongoing validation of data/analytical products to ensure accuracy.
- Engages in continuing education in order to maintain current knowledge base and expertise relative to the technology and software related to the EHR and functional areas being supported

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Math, Information Science or related field required.
- Master's degree preferred.
- 2 years of relevant experience required.
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Strong analytic, qualitative, and quantitative data analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to break down complex problems into phased deliverables required.
- Strong foundational experience in statistical concepts and methodologies, including regression analysis, time series analysis, multivariate analysis, and experimental design preferred.
- Proficiency in SQL preferred.
- Working knowledge of Python (or R), including common machine/deep learning libraries and their implementation preferred.
- Knowledge of Epic data models preferred.
- Fluency with data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Spotfire or PowerBI preferred.
- Ability to work independently and successfully complete assigned tasks on time with limited oversight required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to describe data science concepts to lay/nonexpert audiences preferred.
- Strong attention to detail required.
- Ability to think creatively to develop creative solutions to complex problems required.
- Epic Clarity and/or Caboodle required.
