Function of Position:

The Program Coordinator/Instructor is a combined teaching, administrative, and customer service position. A key responsibility of this position is coordination and instruction of Police Recruit training and Special training programs. The Program Coordinator also supervises the Law Enforcement Technical Assistant and oversees the operation of, and training at, the Rush Range Facility. The Program Coordinator/Instructor reports to the Dean of Public Safety Training Programs.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Coordinates with certifying agencies to ensure that all training meets or exceeds the basic requirements.
  • Establishes basic entry-level training curriculum through the development of course objectives, development of testing instruments, and selection of instructors.
  • Conducts portions of training programs in areas of expertise.
  • Assists instructors in the development of lesson plans, course objectives, and classroom materials.
  • Monitors and evaluates instructors frequently to maintain the standards of instruction.
  • Provides supervision of the class counselors assigned to training programs and the Law Enforcement (LE) Technical Assistant.
  • Provides overall supervision of recruits and students with regard to discipline and remedial needs.
  • Provides qualified expertise in law enforcement areas such as tactics, physical fitness, defensive tactics, firearms, and areas as appropriate to the program coordinator's background, credentials, and experience.
  • Manages the law enforcement recruit program budget.
  • Secondary Functions:

  • Performs all responsibilities of the position either independently or as a member of a team.
  • Instructs in courses or topics as appropriate to the coordinator's experience and credentials.
  • Maintains permanent documentation of training objectives, lesson plans, and testing instruments.
  • Conducts the trainee/student assessment process to include compiling analytical data on testing scores.
  • Maintains documentation of training, objectives, lesson plans, media, and testing instruments for programs as required.
  • Works flexible schedule to coordinate the daytime police academy, as well as the nighttime police academy.
  • Performs other functions as assigned by the Dean of Public Safety Training Programs.

  • Requirements:

    Required Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public safety administration, education, instructional design, or a related field from a regionally-accredited higher education institution.
  • Minimum of five years full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer; this experience must include extensive experience in responding to calls for service, patrol, or investigation of crimes.
  • Prior teaching or training experience in a relevant field.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Commitment to the value of customer service.
  • Understands the foundations of effective police supervision and management as demonstrated by progressively responsible experience as a full-time supervisor and/or manager in a law enforcement agency.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues facing law enforcement.
  • History of continuing professional development.
  • Professional writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Project management skills (including but not limited to: leadership, negotiating, scheduling, task management, and quality management).
  • Competency with personal computer-based word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment of programs and standards.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned master's degree or higher in criminal justice, public safety administration, education, instructional design, or a related field from a regionally-accredited higher education institution.
  • Graduate of the FBI National Academy.
  • Instructor/teaching credentials or certifications.
  • Demonstrated experience as a liaison with emergency service providers in police, fire, and EMS disciplines.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently.

  • Additional Information:

    Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $60,000 to $68,000 and is based on these mentioned factors.
