Description
Incumbents in this class perform work involving responsibility for the skilled operation of heavy construction equipment and performance of complex maintenance work in the City’s water distribution system. Incumbents operate, inspect and care for motor equipment and are skilled in the performance of labor associated with the maintenance and construction of the City’s water distribution system. Work in this title is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions and incumbents in this class may work weekends, holidays, irregular hours, or nights and will be required to respond to water system emergencies outside of scheduled work hours. Work is done under the direction of a Senior Maintenance Mechanic/Water Grid or other higher ranking supervisory personnel in the Water Bureau. Incumbents may also be required to perform work in other Bureaus within the Department of Environmental Services based on seasonal fluctuations in workloads. Related work is performed as required.
This position is a traineeship lasting (18) eighteen months. Upon completion of the traineeship the incumbent’s supervisor will determine if the incumbent has developed the requisite full performance knowledge, skills and abilities for the title of Water Maintenance Worker/Construction. If the incumbent has, they will automatically transition into that title on a permanent basis. If the incumbent’s performance does not reflect the requisite full performance knowledge, skills and abilities at the end of the traineeship or anytime during, the traineeship will be terminated.
CITY RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE
Operates backhoe, front-end loader, dump truck and other heavy construction and automotive equipment required in the excavation and associated backfilling of water distribution repair and construction sites;
Assists work crews in the repair and installation of fire hydrants, water mains, water services and water valves;
Keeps assigned equipment, tools, supplies, and consumables in clean and good working order;
Performs daily vehicle inspection and reports defects before and after operation in writing on required forms;
Inspects, lubricates, repairs, and paints hydrants;
Assists in locating, raising, lowering, inspecting and repairing valves and pipes;
Makes taps on street water mains for service to customers;
Tests for, locates, and repairs leaks in cast-iron, ductile, and PVC water mains;
Uses all safety equipment assigned when necessary and operates equipment and performs all duties in a safe manner;
May read and repair water meters;
May perform minor maintenance and upkeep to Water Bureau buildings and grounds.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
:
Possession of a valid New York State Class B permit and Class D license at time of application.
Possession of a valid New York State Class B license within (6) six months of appointment.
Licensure must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
