The Mechanical Engineering Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking applicants for a Lecturer position who have a strong commitment to engineering education, student mentoring, and who are focused on the success of students both inside and outside of the classroom. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop various mechanical engineering courses and laboratories. Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree and should have the ability to support core lecture and hands-on laboratory courses as well as upper-level elective and graduate courses throughout the curriculum (including the areas of introductory and intermediate mechanics and thermo-fluids, with hands-on labs). Additionally, lecturers mentor and assist student design teams, advise undergraduate students, join and contribute to departmental committees, and engage in continuous personal professional development.

Department/College Description

Mechanical Engineering is one of six departments in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering (KGCOE). Other programs include Electrical, Computer, Biomedical, Chemical, and Industrial Engineering. The college houses PhD programs including Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, and Microsystems Engineering. There are over 100 faculty in the college with expertise in 3D printing, robotics, manufacturing, materials, nano-bio sensors, machine learning, tissue engineering, and aerosol and particle physics, as well as engineering education, gender in STEM, and engineering design. The KGCOE is the nation’s premier career-oriented college of engineering, with one of the oldest and largest mandatory cooperative education programs in the world, and with over 2,500 undergraduate and 400 graduate students. Hallmarks of the undergraduate experience include one full year of cooperative education, an innovative multidisciplinary senior design program, and an impressive variety of well-supported student teams and clubs.

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department is the largest academic department in KGCOE, with over 1000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. ME offers the Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering with undergraduate options in Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Energy and the Environment, and Bioengineering. Outside the classroom, students can participate in many different engineering clubs, and faculty frequently serve as advisors to these. At the graduate level, ME offers a PhD degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering with multiple focus areas, a Master of Engineering, and an Advanced Certificate in Vibrations Engineering.

Instructional faculty are supported by many core facilities and efforts across campus including a fully-staffed machine shop providing machining, fabrication, design, and manufacturing services, the AMPrint Center for Additive Manufacturing and Multifunctional Printing, a NY State Center for Advanced Technology, and the Semiconductor and Microfabrication Laboratory with cleanroom facilities. In addition, instructional faculty can participate in, and be supported by programs offered by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at RIT, the KEEN partnership, the Construct student center for rapid prototyping, the Multidisciplinary Senior Design Program, and others.
