Description of Duties
This is a technical position in the Department of Public Safety, County Crime Laboratory responsible for identifying and analyzing various types of firearms and ammunition. The employee determines the type and operability of weapons, and projectile velocity, and compares striations and marks on bullets, casings and other evidence with known exemplars. Work involves use and routine maintenance of sophisticated laboratory equipment. The employee issues reports of findings and testifies in legal proceedings. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports. This position differs from Forensic Firearms Examiner I as it performs the less complex firearms analyses, lacks responsibility for independently developing laboratory procedures, and/or lacks supervisory responsibility of a technical staff. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of, a Forensic Firearms Examiner I or other higher-level staff member. Staff supervision is not a responsibility although training staff in general firearms examination skills may be required. Does related work as required.
