Detailed Job Description

The University Writing Program at the Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for a full-time lecturer position in Rhetoric and Writing (Composition) to begin August 2024. This is a renewable nine month position, with a 4/4 teaching load and service in the University Writing Program. Competitive salary with full-time benefits. Opportunity for promotion (to Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer) is also available as per RIT policy and timeline.

Department/College Description

As part of the School of Individualized Study, the University Writing Program (UWP) serves to both teach and support students as they write in various phases of their RIT career, from the first year on into graduate studies. Nearly all first-year entrants to RIT must take first-year writing, which means instructors interact with a diverse range of students with different interests, backgrounds, and abilities. All UWP courses teach students that effective writing is a recursive, write-to-learn process influenced by rhetorical-social contexts, genres, purposes, technologies, and feedback. The program offers direct instruction (with some online options), in English and in ASL, as well as writing center consultations. While the UWP prioritizes student success, it is also committed to faculty governance, and faculty members are highly involved in continuing to shape the program through collaborative committee work, curricular initiatives, and democratic decision-making.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience teaching first-year writing and a variety of undergraduate writing courses (e.g., basic writing, technical writing, advanced composition). We also seek candidates who will contribute meaningfully to RIT’s commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences. Applicants who have experience working with undergraduate and/or graduate students in writing centers are also strongly encouraged to apply.

  • 2 or more years of experience teaching post-secondary composition/first-year writing as the instructor of record or relevant teaching in a writing related discipline.

  • Active professional development in Rhetoric and Writing, or related professional development experience.
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
