This role will be based in Macedon, NY.

WHAT WE NEED

The Environmental & Sustainability Specialist will help us achieve our ambitious sustainability goals through the development, implementation and management of a comprehensive sustainability strategy strongly focusing on renewable energy integration and science based targets. You will collaborate with cross functional teams to identify and implement sustainable practices throughout the supply chain, including developing training programs for employees.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive sustainability strategy for our food manufacturing operations, with a strong focus on renewable energy integration and science-based target setting.
  • Design and implement an environmental management system (EMS) aligned with international standards (e.g., ISO 14001) to manage environmental aspects and impacts.
  • Conduct research, identify, and lead sustainability initiatives, such as waste reduction programs, renewable energy procurement and implementation, water conservation efforts, and initiatives to achieve science-based targets.
  • Calculate and track our Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in accordance with international standards (e.g., GHG Protocol).
  • Set ambitious but achievable reduction targets for Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, and develop strategies to achieve them.
  • Develop science-based targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) methodology.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (operations, procurement, engineering, etc.) to identify and implement sustainable practices throughout the supply chain, including renewable energy procurement and integration.
  • Lead supply chain and specific raw material sustainability programs and certifications.
  • Manage and track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to sustainability performance and report progress to senior management.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest sustainability trends and regulations in the food manufacturing industry.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including renewable energy providers, industry groups, NGOs, and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
  • Develop and deliver sustainability training programs for employees.
  • Support the development and communication of our sustainability goals and achievements to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support the manufacturing sites in collecting data and preparing environmental reports for outside agencies such as EPA, CalEPA, NY DEC, etc.
  • Ensure that all operations are conducted in accordance with all existing federal, state, and local Environmental and Sustainability regulations and company policies and procedures, including but not limited to EPA, CalEPA, and NY DEC.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Agriculture, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in sustainability in a manufacturing setting.
  • Food manufacturing industry is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of environmental sustainability principles and practices, with a focus on renewable energy solutions and science-based target setting methodologies.
  • Experience in developing and implementing sustainability strategies, including experience with environmental management systems (EMS) and greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis tools, with experience in GHG accounting software a plus.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy technologies and their application in manufacturing facilities is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and its methodologies is a plus.
  • Experience delivering training content related to environmental programs highly preferred.
  • Transferable level of knowledge of CalEPA and NYDEC regulations.
  • Due to SQF regulations, all employees must be able to fluently read, write, and converse in the English language.

At BRF, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. The base pay range for this role is between $70,000-$80,000. Your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
