Job Summary

Please note: This is a 12 month position that may include occasional evening or weekend responsibilities.

The Nurse Leader plays a vital role in delivering exceptional healthcare services to the RIT student population while ensuring the smooth daily operations of the nursing staff in the Student Health Center. This position offers the unique opportunity to serve as a clinical leader, operating at the forefront of their licensure.
Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Clinical Services, the Nurse Leader provides primary care, emergency services, and health education, emphasizing personal health awareness to enhance student success. Additionally, the Nurse Leader will provide essential leadership and supervision to the nursing team, ensuring that services uphold the highest standards of care and professionalism.

This position requires a minimum of three years of leadership experience, including direct supervision responsibilities such as hiring, performance improvement, and conducting performance appraisals.

Job Responsibilities

Independently triage patients via phone, patient chat and in-person interactions:

  • Assess and evaluate student symptoms, reactions, and progress to determine appropriate disposition.
  • Intervene directly using sound principles of nursing practice; or consult the appropriate care provider; or schedule provider appointment as needed.
  • Provide home care advice and patient education.
  • Assess wounds and determine appropriate dressing.
  • Provide first aid and respond to walk-in emergencies (i.e. anaphylaxis).
  • Determine immunization and tuberculosis status, administer appropriate immunizations using standing orders.
  • Utilize standing orders for minor acute illness where appropriate.
Support the clinical team in scheduled visits:
  • Prepare and support patient appointments with NP/PA/MD.
  • Provide patient care, comfort and safety during visits.
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation of all interactions using electronic medical record.
  • Collect and prepare lab specimens (phlebotomy skills).
  • Provide education and counseling during clinical interactions.
  • Administer medications/immunizations/therapeutic and/or diagnostic procedures per provider order or protocol.
  • Assist in monitoring patient flow, participate in maintenance of clinical areas/equipment.
  • Delegate appropriate tasks to medical assistants.
  • Follow up on radiology and laboratory reports.
Provide leadership and supervision to nursing and medical office assistant staff:
  • Collaborate on nursing initiatives and quality improvement projects.
  • Manage staffing including time off requests and time cards.
  • Conduct performance appraisals, lead and participate in hiring and termination decisions.
Participate in professional development and learning opportunities for self and team, including, but not limited to:
  • Formal nursing professional development.
  • Team building within Integrated Health Services.
  • Participation in department, division or university committees.
  • Health Education program planning or implementation.

Required Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and professional license as a Registered Nurse
  • 3-5 years of nursing experience with 3 years in a leadership role in a healthcare setting
Skills:
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be a self-starter.
  • Proficient in triage, immunizations, assessment of emergency situations, and phlebotomy.
  • Ability to complete responsibilities requiring standing and walking with light lifting.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team.
  • Manage confidential and private health care and personnel information per university and professional standards.
  • Competence using electronic medical records, word processing, email, and electronic calendaring software.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences.
  • Leadership skills to effectively lead and motivate a team of nurses and other healthcare staff.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address complex healthcare situations and make informed decisions.
  • Emotional intelligence and empathy to provide compassionate care and support to patients and their families.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards related to nursing practice.
  • Continuous learning mindset to stay updated with advancements in healthcare practices and technologies.
  • Conflict resolution skills to handle interpersonal conflicts and demanding situations within the healthcare setting.
  • Ability to adapt to change and remain resilient in the face of challenges.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage workflows, schedules, and resources effectively.

  • Knowledge of ethical principles and professional standards governing nursing practice.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL), or willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years outpatient experience, college health experience preferred.
  • Experience with telephone triage.
