SUMMARY
This position is a formal NYS apprenticeship, partnered with the Career Progression Program (CPP) of the National Academy of Opticianry, which includes training and technical instruction including, but not limited to, providing comprehensive patient care related to patient evaluation, prescription recommendation, eyewear selection, fitting and purchase, and coordination with other health care professionals, with emphasis on retail sales.

ATTRIBUTES
- High School diploma or completion of equivalent program (GED) and at least six months of retail optical experience; or possession of NYS Training Permit for Ophthalmic and/or Contact Lens Dispensing; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Upon hire must obtain a NYS Training permit and register with the CPP.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under direct guidance and supervision of the managing Optician including the Optician’s physical presence when required by NYS guidelines.
- Coordinates service support; inventory, equipment maintenance and repair, requisitioning of supplies, and materials. Uses specialized software to maintain customer database and report financial transactions.
- Fills ophthalmic eyeglass prescriptions specified by the MD or OD and makes final adjustments to the eyewear to the satisfaction of the patient.
- Assists patients in selecting frames according to style, color, coordinating frames with facial and eye measurements and ophthalmic prescription. Instructs patients in adapting to, wearing and caring for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.
- Maintains retail inventory, which involves meeting with sales representatives, ordering frames, lenses and other supplies. Creates pleasing displays of merchandise to entice purchases.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
PAY RANGE: $18.00 - $18.00
