Description Employees in this position are responsible for installing, configuring and maintaining one or more dimensions of the Desktop/End User, Network, or Server environments. They participate in team tactical planning and problem solving. They follow procedures and adhere to Service Level Agreements (SLAs) required to maintain City computing needs and ensure this documentation is accurately maintained. Performs related work as required.
  • Configures and manages software release and patch testing, Desktop/End User, Server, or Network upgrades, as well as monitoring and resolution of all related problems;
  • Provisions Physical or Virtual desktop, and/or Servers and Storage within a VM and SAN environment for servers, and/or provisions wireless, network switches, and routers in the network environment;
  • Responsible for day-to-day operations (Maintenance of Business, Keep it Running, Keep it Current);
  • Provides input and recommendations on specific technical issues for projects and day-to-day operations and recommendation on technical configurations and improvements based on industry standard approaches;
  • Maintains security-related technologies in the relevant spaces (desktop or server anti-virus end point protection, server and/or network firewalls);
  • Uses monitoring tools and ensures systems performance parameters stay within acceptable user requirements or promised SLAs;
  • Monitors demand for services and capacity and reports when there is risk of over-allocation, reduced customer satisfaction, missed SLAs, device saturation in their respective technologies;
  • Participates on technology projects of limited scope;
  • Maintains accurate entry into resource planning tools for projects and base operations;
  • Participates in the development of team strategic plans;
  • Interfaces with vendors, for life cycle maintenance and support activities, obtaining quotes for specific technologies as required;
  • Resolves Level 1 and Level 2 Help Desk Requests in a timely manner for the relevant technology while adhering to incident response and Help Desk processes and procedures;
  • Diagrams flow charts;
  • Creates operational documentation for Help Desk, On-Call, and Incident Response;
  • Actively pursues manager assigned training opportunities (classroom and self-guided).
*High school diploma or Equivalent, PLUS:

I. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field AND one (1) year of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in Information Technology which MUST have included one of the following:

  • configuration, installation, and maintenance of server environments
  • configuration, installation, and maintenance of network environments
  • configuration, deployment, and maintenance of end-user computing environments

OR

II. An Associates degree in Computer Science or a closely related field AND two (2) years of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as stated in I above.

OR

III. Any Bachelor’s or Associates degree AND three (3) years of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as stated in I above.

OR

*IV. Five (5) years of full-time work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as stated in I above.Scopes/Subjects of Examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and/or abilities in the following areas.

Preparing written material: These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences.

Principles and practices of LAN administration: These questions test for knowledge of procedures and terminology applicable to administering a local area network (LAN). They cover such subjects as installing, configuring, and upgrading a network; establishing user accounts and assigning access rights; monitoring network performance and troubleshooting; dividing networks and linking to other networks; creating and documenting procedures for users; and establishing and maintaining network security. The questions are not specific to any particular LAN.

Principles of networked communications: These questions test for basic concepts and terminology of data communications. They cover such subjects as data communications, types of networks, modems, security, protocols, topologies, transmission media, wiring, installation, and troubleshooting. The questions are general in scope and are not specific to any vendor or system.

Principles of providing user support: These questions test for knowledge and skill in working in a user support situation. They cover such subjects as how to communicate effectively with users requesting help; how to deal with different types of situations; troubleshooting techniques; and how to gather, organize and make available technical information needed to provide support.
