Job Summary
The Safety Test Lead and Battery Systems Engineer will be responsible for planning and executing tests on battery cells, modules, packs and systems for performance and safety evaluations at the BDC battery testing facility in Eastman Business Park in Rochester, NY. The role requires knowledge and understanding of secondary batteries and control systems, power electronics, measurement, data acquisition, and test equipment, as well as equipment programming and data analysis. The Test & Safety Engineer will interface with customers to develop test plans, manage projects, analyze and report data, and prepare test reports. They will contribute to optimizing test procedures and specifying new equipment, specifically for a new large-scale safety test facility in development, as well as for system level and energy storage control systems testing. A thorough Engineering background is required to fully understand the function of devices and test equipment and to conceive and design advanced battery test programs. Additionally, batteries store large amounts of concentrated energy and can be very hazardous if this energy is released in an uncontrolled manner. The safety engineering side of this role is of utmost importance to ensure a safe test environment.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop test plans and time estimates for customer projects
- Program test equipment, set-up and execute performance and safety tests (this might include lifting batteries and fixtures up to 50 lbs.)
- Program data acquisition systems, analyze data, write reports
- Optimize test procedures and specify/implement new equipment
- Project management of testing, including customer communication
- Conduct hazard analyses for safety of test operations
- Train co-workers on proper safety and emergency response procedures
- Write standard operating procedures
- Travel to conferences and trade shows
- Stay up-to-date on industry trends and test standards for battery testing and safety
- Supervise Co-op students and technicians on specific jobs
- OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Required Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree - Electrical, Physics, Computer Systems or similar Engineering degree or
- Advanced degree in related Engineering field
- 3-5 years of experience in customized testing of batteries or similar devices
Skills- Data analysis skills and knowledge of tools such as Excel, Matlab, etc.
- Programming experience for test environment, e.g. LabView, Enerchron, MWare, etc.
- Troubleshooting skills of electrical and safety test equipment
- Engineering mindset with the ability to problem solve and develop creative solutions to new test tasks and challenges
- Deep understanding of industry standards and testing protocols for battery and energy storage devices.
- Knowledge of battery hazards, safety standards and OSHA rules for safe operation of battery safety tests
- Detail-oriented and quality-focused to ensure data integrity
Preferred Qualifications
- Good communication skills to interface with customers on technical matters
- Solid writing and presentation skills to generate professional reports and presentations
- Project management skills
- Good team player, able to admit shortcomings, positive attitude
- Mechanical aptitude, experience using various tools, building and fixing things
