The Emergency Communications Department’s Summer Public Safety Intern Program (SPSIP) is a four (4) week exploratory program of study created to give a broad understanding of telecommunications with a focus on Emergency Communications and the Rochester/Monroe County 911 Center. Participants receive training in answering calls, processing information, and review the duties and responsibilities of phone operators in both emergency and non-emergency settings. Within two weeks of successfully completing this course, plus the two-week Hillside YETA course that follows, the participant will be eligible to sign up for an accelerated Civil Service Exam (exam can be bypassed depending on the status of the NYS HELP Program).
The Summer Public Safety Intern Program (SPSIP) is a program scheduled to be held from July 21, 2025 to August 15, 2025. The summer program is designed to provide participants with a set of classes and activities to prepare them to pursue and obtain selected careers in public safety.
The coursework and training will provide skills in basic academics, general employability and decision-making, and job-specific requirements. Participants will also receive an overview and history of the career/industry selected and a basic understanding of its general management and operations.
