Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities:
Provides legal services and advice. Addresses issues, disputes, risks, projects, contracts, corporate arrangements, transactions, and litigations of a legal nature on behalf of the University of Rochester, including all its divisions and affiliates. Manages legal projects and identifies legal issues and exposures to the General Counsel and other members of management and recommends appropriate actions. May act as Practice Group Leader as requested.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Addresses issues, disputes, risks, threatened and filed claims and litigation, and other legal projects, contracts, corporate arrangements and transactions on behalf of the University of Rochester, including all its divisions and affiliates. Identifies practical legal solutions to complex challenges, influencing others to develop effective and creative solutions.
- Provides individualized guidance to senior leaders and managers within the organization. With limited guidance from the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel, manages legal projects (internal and external) from inception to completion.
- Identifies legal issues and exposures to management and recommends appropriate resolutions or future actions.
- As appropriate, coordinates contacts with regulatory agencies and responds to governmental regulatory initiatives.
- Reviews policy and provides advice to key stakeholders at the University, Medical Center, and/or its affiliates and/or other divisions of the University. Recommends policy content and updates.
- Contributes to and delivers reports for the Office of Counsel and legal updates and educational presentations for faculty and staff. Maintains and improves personal legal expertise through continuing legal education.
- Advises and occasionally serves on University and affiliate committees.
- With approval of the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel, oversees outside legal counsel working on University or affiliate legal issues or legal disputes and responds independently to outside counsel negotiating with or bringing disputes against the University, its affiliates and/or their personnel.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Juris Doctorate and 10 years of relevant legal experience required
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Specialized knowledge in one or more fields of law relevant to the needs of the University required
- Ability to successfully plan for and lead complex projects within deadlines required
- Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated ability and judgment in the timely, effective transmission of information to stake holders, including the General Counsel. Strong writing skills required
- Strong attention to detail required
- Ability to prioritize work independently and complete projects in a timely manner required
- Knowledge in areas of the law directly impacting governing boards and senior executives such as corporate governance and fiduciary duties, ethics, and legal compliance, and strategic transactions preferred
- General familiarity with the following areas: student affairs (FERPA, Title IX, academic and non-academic discipline, disability accommodations and ADA compliance, local, state and federal civil rights laws affecting admissions, financial aid and programs, athletics, study abroad), faculty affairs (tenure, academic freedom, grievances), copyright and intellectual property, general liability/risk management, charitable giving preferred
- Experience working in a university, college, or with an organization that includes an academic medical center preferred
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
