GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Director, URMC Advancement Marketing Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of both long- and short-term communications plans to support philanthropic giving to the University of Rochester Medical Center, Golisano Children’s Hospital, the Wilmot Cancer Institute, and UR Medicine affiliates. The Director provides project management and oversight of all marketing communications and donor engagement activity, including content strategy and creation, editorial planning, marketing collateral development, video and website production, special event promotion, and creative resource management specifically for URMC Advancement.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Advancement Marketing Communications, and working in close collaboration with the Senior Associate Vice President for Medical Center Advancement, the Director collaborates and consults with colleagues to determine and implement appropriate marketing communications tactics in support of strategic plan objectives. On a frequent basis, the Director interacts with URMC leaders, deans, department chairs, clinicians, scientists, and fundraising staff to interpret and distill complex information for a lay audience. The Director creates and aligns philanthropic messages with fundraising and engagement priorities and works with colleagues throughout Advancement to ensure consistency and quality across multiple and varied communications and event platforms.
Working closely with the Executive Director, the Director will interact regularly with URMC Public Relations and UR Medicine Marketing, Annual Giving, Alumni Relations, Planned Giving, Internet Projects, and other institutional partners. As such, the Director must be highly collaborative and cooperative, willing to experiment with new marketing communications approaches, understand the importance of brand management, be comfortable working with data and analytics, and have an innovative spirit that drives organizational excellence. The Director supervises an associate director of marketing communications.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Marketing Communications
- Conceive, develop, and evaluate detailed marketing communications plans to support the fundraising and engagement objectives for URMC
- Develop and explore innovative strategies to maximize new revenue
- Oversee the implementation of marketing communications and creative project schedules, tracking key project milestones and adjusting project plans and/or resources to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, adhering to the highest possible standards to meet or exceed partner expectations
- Collaborate with colleagues in Academic Programs, Volunteer Engagement, and Constituent Engagement to help develop marketing and promotional strategies and materials for 6-10 annual marquis events; attend all planning meetings; serve as communications representative to event committees
- Work closely with graphic designers, digital strategists, email builders, and writers to execute communications projects in a timely fashion, ensuring quality and consistency with the overall Advancement brand
- Conduct regular meetings with unit-based colleagues, faculty and staff to update “product knowledge,” assess needs, and identify potential new approaches to marketing communications
Content Development
- Serve as a content producer and production manager for a range of URMC Advancement materials (print, web, video) including, but not limited to fundraising collateral, stories of impact, general email copy, and advertising/promotion copy
- Consult with colleagues and program partners to create persuasive, informative, and inspiring text for marketing materials targeting donors, grateful patients, alumni, and friends that help build enthusiasm and financial support for URMC priorities
- Generate story ideas and translate scientific and medical information as needed for marketing purposes for a lay audience
- Collaborate with editorial teams for signature publications including Rochester Medicine, Medicine Magazine, Nursing magazine, and other University-owned media channels to ensure proper coverage of philanthropy and engagement activities
Donor Engagement/Major and Principal Gift Support
- Working directly with fundraising staff, develop polished communication materials to cultivate, solicit, and steward major and principal gifts donors and prospects.
- Serve as back-up writer to other colleagues as needed
Team Leadership
- Serve as a key leader on the Executive Team of URMC Advancement, advising, consulting, and representing Advancement marketing communications.
- Consult with colleagues to offer expertise and solve complex problems.
- Motivate and guide the professional development of one FTEs.
- Manage day to day administration of the URMC Marketing Communications Department, including human resources and accounts payables issues
- Maintain and demonstrate exceptional standards for quality of work, integrity, and professionalism

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 7+ years of communications experience with knowledge of higher education or academic medicine fundraising, marketing, special event planning, and volunteer management
- Excellent writing and editing skills with an understanding of creative production (graphic design, multimedia, etc.) and facility with web and social media content creation, email marketing, and management of vendor relationships
- Sophisticated ability to understand and communicate effectively with diverse audiences
- Excellent oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- The ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize duties and work well under pressure
- Demonstrated ability to work with, motivate, and lead teams and volunteers
- Proven qualities of initiative, creativity, team orientation, and a commitment to client/customer service of the highest quality
- Understanding of needs of high-end donors, particularly as they pertain to the quality of an event or experience
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and knowledge of graphic design
- Occasional evening and weekend work required
