Function of Position:

The Healthy Hero Co-Director of Academics is responsible for supporting all camp activities, participating in core programs and working directly with students attending the camp, counselors and volunteers. Responsible for general safety, development, growth and skill achievement of the campers.

The Co-Director will work directly with counselors, teachers, administrative staff, and MCC employees. The successful candidate will work to ensure all participants are successful, safe and identify potential problems throughout the camp operation.

The Co-Director works closely with the Executive Director to build curriculum for the english, math, health and music academic classes. This staff member then works to provide curriculum to the teachers assigned to teach the classes and help them to understand the goals of the class and meet them with our campers. The Co-Director will monitor and track pre and post-camp scores in academic classes.

In addition to building curriculum, the Co-Director will work to recruit teachers and senior counselors to work at camp, monitor their performance and assist them in meeting the demands of our camp. If standards are not met, the Co-Director will work to improve performance and offer additional training, or support, as needed.

The Co-Director works with counselors to develop the sport curriculum and goals making sure all staff understand the schedule and techniques to be taught in each sport. The Co-Director will manage and document growth in athletic performance throughout the camp.

A key role of the Co-Director is to work with the Dean of Camp in identifying, managing and solving behavioral issues with campers and staff. The Co-Director will identify or work with campers referred by counselors when behavioral or performance issues arise. The role will document all interactions and develop a plan of improvement so that the staff member or camper can continue their camp attendance. All interactions related to discipline with counselors or students is primarily handled by the Dean. However, the Co-Director is a key partner in this effort and is available for consultation and assistance, as needed.

To succeed as Co-Director, a candidate should have excellent communication and teaching/training skills, enjoy working with young adults and elementary grade students. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to multi-task throughout a very busy day staying in touch with all camp staff.

*This is a temporary, grant funded position.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Interact, train and monitor all staff working at the camps, including counselors, teachers, RochesterWorks staff and volunteers. Monitor their activity and assist with any questions, problems or issues that may arise on a daily basis.
  • Manage morning "check-in" with counselors to prepare them for the day's schedule and be sure everyone is ready for the work day. Answer questions and offer advice, as needed.
  • Support and participate in a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, music, games, opening and dismissal procedures, swimming, initiatives, math, ELA, breakfast, lunch, bus duty, etc.
  • Manage discipline of campers reported for poor behavior or rule breaking. Work directly with the Dean of Camp to identify problems and build a plan for continued positive camp involvement. In cases where the camper must be dismissed, the Dean of Camp will notify parents. All disciplinary interactions are documented daily.
  • Report concerns of camper's experiences to camp leadership.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes, but is not limited to, being responsible for your camper's safety and their whereabouts at all times.
  • Memorize emergency procedures and enforce all camp rules.
  • Lead and participate in camp trainings and orientation.

  • Requirements:

    Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, or higher, along with five (5) year of previous experience working with children.
  • Upon hire, completion of Healthy Hero Camp Orientation and training.
  • Upbeat, positive and engaging personality.
  • Ability to work with management team to create successful camp.
  • Ability to train counselors and teachers in the skills required to support students and effectively implement the curriculum and sports programs.
  • Ability to manage behavioral concerns with campers and staff, in conjunction with the Dean of Camp.
  • Interest in working with school aged children.
  • Ability to assist in the implementation of program activities.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

  • Additional Information:

    Dates of temporary assignment: MCC Healthy Hero Camps operation: June 30, 2025 - August 1, 2025. (Closed July 4, 2025). The Co-Director of Academics will work each of these days. In addition to these required hours, the Co-Director will begin staff recruitment and curriculum evaluation/edits beginning February 1, 2025.

    Hours: Camp Hours are 7:45am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

    Salary: $20,000
