The School of Design in the College of Art and Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology invites applicants to apply for a Tenure-Track faculty position to teach in the Graphic Design undergraduate program. The School of Design focuses on developing strong conceptual and formal visual communication skills through a pragmatic and applied pedagogy. Expectations include teaching 3 courses per semester, with a reduced load offered during the tenure-track period.; participating in innovative teaching and curriculum development; engaging in scholarly research activities of significance to the field; rendering service to the school, college, and university; career advising and mentoring undergraduate students; and participating in professional organizations important to graphic design.

Faculty Position: Graphic Design
We are seeking candidates who are well-rounded designers and educators who understand current and emerging trends in contemporary practice and graphic design education, such as Typography, Information Design, Experiential Design, Packaging Design, Systems Design, Branding, Interactive Design, UX/UI, and Motion Design with an understanding of traditional print-based design and digital technology. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring unique interest or experience in Artificial Intelligence tools as related to their field. Candidates should be qualified to teach throughout the curriculum and on all levels. Ideal candidates will possess the ability to provide leadership and vision in integrating emerging media applications into the Graphic Design curriculum. Preparing students for professional practice is a central focus of our program.

Department/College Description

THE SCHOOL: The internationally renowned School of Design (SOD) offers five undergraduate programs in 3D Digital Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and New Media Design, as well as two graduate programs in Industrial Design and Visual Communication Design. SOD also includes the Vignelli Center for Design Studies, with its vast archive of design artifacts. Other unique RIT resources for scholarly research include the Cary Graphic Arts Collection and the Graphic Design Archives.

SOD has an enrollment of over 800 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. The Graphic Design program has over 175 students. SOD alumni and faculty are nationally and internationally recognized and include many award recipients and design leaders at global companies and organizations. Required Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA in Graphic Design preferred, but will also consider other Master’s degrees (MA, MS, etc.) in related fields with applicable experience.
  • MFA (or other related Master’s degree) in Graphic Design or a terminal degree in a related field of study.
  • Minimum of two years full-time professional experience in graphic design and/or a related design field.
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience at the university level beyond a teaching assistantship.
  • ?Demonstrate fluency in practice areas, such as Typography, Information Design, Experiential Design, Packaging Design, Systems Design, Branding, Interactive Design, UX/UI, and Motion Design with an understanding of traditional print-based design along with digital design and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in graphic design theory and practice.
  • ??Interest or experience in Artificial Intelligence related to design and its processes.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to contribute meaningfully to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
