I. JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Education is responsible for the management, development, implementation, evaluation,
and continual improvement of the RMSC Museum & Science Center’s programmatic and educational
offerings including public programming, school ?eld trips, outreach, community engagement, camp
programs, adult programs and more. They are the strategic and collaborative leader of the Education
Department which provides an educational, fun, and safe Museum environment that is conducive to
inspiring, engaging, and interactive experiences that serve the RMSC’s diverse visitor audiences.

The Director of Education articulates and manages priorities and expectations for their team and leads
the department in: developing and managing several departmental budgets ( $1.79m), setting the
strategy programs, supporting Education Department initiatives, framing the tone, standards, culture,
and work plans of the team, and collaborating with other RMSC departments to ensure the Museum and
Science Center’s educational programs offer engaging and impactful experiences for all audiences which
align with the RMSC’s Mission, core values, Strategic Plan.

The Director of Education has supervisory responsibilities for the Education Department team (12
full-time, 25 part-time, and approximately 90 seasonal) and a robust group of RMSC volunteers. They are
responsible for leading the interviewing, hiring, and coaching of staff, annual performance reviews and
goal-setting processes, staffing/scheduling (as needed), and staff development for the department.

The Director of Education effectively communicates the needs, goals, and strategies of the Education
Department with other departments (Guest Services, Marketing, Exhibits, Development, etc.)

The Education Director is responsible for revenue-positive business development, supporting the
mission of the RMSC to inspire curiosity, exploration, and engagement across history, science, culture,
and the natural world.

II. DUTIES (and percentage of time spent)

Describe duties, responsibilities, and essential functions: %

A. Departmental Planning & Leadership 50

The Director of Education is responsible for the management, development, implementation,
evaluation, and continual improvement of the Museum & Science Center’s rich slate of the
Education Department's Museum-based programmatic/educational offerings, and community
partnerships:

? Setting the strategy for the department’s experiences/programs in alignment with the
RMSC mission, strategy, and goals

? Setting the department budgets and managing them to reach both revenue and
expense goals. Supports staff in setting and managing their program/project budgets.

? Operational responsibility and accountability for the Museum’s portfolio of educational
programs and offerings including staffing, evaluation and revision of program models,
and testing and launching new exploration models within the department’s and
Museum’s strategic framework and priorities

? Overseeing and managing large-scale projects, active grants and new grant
opportunities, programs, personnel, and budgets

? Ensuring programs and materials for school audiences are standards-based
? Leading departmental efforts and actions to improve programming, communications,

and teamwork that results in a more valued visitor and participant experience.
? Ensure effective and efficient communication by scheduling and leading

regular department meetings, sharing timely updates via email, posting
information, etc.

? Support an internal culture that inspires and empowers the team to live the
RMSC mission to its highest standards, maintain morale, and ?nd
opportunities for growing the team’s abilities and capacity

? Serves on the RMSC Leadership Team and actively participates with other members of
the senior leadership to set the strategic direction of the RMSC, its offerings, and how
it engages with, and serves the community. The Director may provide reports and
statistics, information, and support as requested for institutional planning/initiatives.

? Seeks opportunities to collaborate with other community organizations to expand and
diversify the Museum’s audience, extend the RMSC’s reach, and advance the RMSC’s
mission. Establishes and maintains relationships with community stakeholders,
partners, and local leaders and organizations.

B. Cross-Departmental & Institutional Collaboration 30

The Director of Education is responsible for cross-departmental and institutional
collaboration in the development, and implementation of the Museum and Science Center’s
programs and experiences. Effective collaboration represents an essential function that
supports RMSC’s Mission, vision, core values, and Strategic Plan and builds capacity for the
future of the institution. Responsibilities include:

? Work collaboratively with Marketing on the following:
o Developing strategy, written content, and promotional materials for publicizing

all Education Department programs and events.
o Supporting the creation of promotional material for the experiences/programs

and publicity on both the website and through social media.

o Determining off-site marketing events where the Museum needs to have a
presence; scheduling and coordinating staff/volunteer coverage at those
events

o Being a spokesperson for programs on local media, when requested.
? Work with Development/Fundraising on the following:

o Identify, coordinate, and develop potential new funding and grant
opportunities. Assist with the writing of proposals and reports to donors.

o Share department needs and experiences/program details to support the
generation of funding opportunities through grants and/or sponsorships and
provide accurate and timely data.

o Represent the Education Department at community or fundraising events
? Work with all RMSC departments to successfully execute the RMSC mission
? Participate in cross-organizational teams and Board Committees to support RMSC

operations and objectives.
? Represents the RMSC as Representative on the Genesee Community Charter School’s

(our partner and tenant) Board of Trustees.

C. Supervisory Responsibilities 15%

The Director of Education is responsible for the direct supervision of 6 full-time staff
members and the indirect supervision of program facilitators and seasonal staff who report
directly to the Program Coordinators & Managers across the department, including indirect
support of the management of all RMSC Volunteers (100+).

Supervisory responsibilities include:

? Supervises the Education department team of full-time and regular part-time staff
including Assistant Director of Education, Presentation & Outreach Supervisor, Camp
Manager, Camp & Volunteer Programs Coordinator, Community Engagement Manager,
School Programs Coordinator, and Education Facilitator(s).

? Acts together with the Director of Facilities and outreach staff to direct the proper use
and maintenance of the RMSC Outreach vehicle.

? Updates job descriptions, as needed, for, interviews, hires, trains staff, and supports
department in that process for their part-time teams and direct reports

? Completes annual performance reviews; evaluates and documents staff performance,
recommends salary adjustments, promotions, and, if needed, disciplinary action for all
direct reports and assists them in doing the same for their staff

? Schedules and plans regular department meetings
? Leads the goal-setting process for the department and all department team members;

sets standards for all full-time and part-time education staff delivering programs and
ensures that expectations are met.

? Monitors employees’ attendance, approves excused absences, veri?es and approves
time cards and time off requests

? Establishes and maintains a positive team atmosphere that creates a welcoming,
supportive, and inclusive environment.

D. Other Duties as Assigned 5%

visitors/students/groups and Volunteers that are aligned with RMSC mission and brand

? Ensuring a safe, clean, and well-managed physical environment that contributes to a positive
experience for all Museum visitors, program participants, staff, and Volunteers

? Providing leadership for the Museum’s Education Department and providing professional
representation of the Education Department team and programs in
cross-departmental/organization teams, projects, and events and the RMSC in external teams

? Incorporating RMSC’s principles and values of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, non-discrimination,
excellence, lifelong learning, community, innovation, and integrity into all aspects of the position
including program development, delivering and evaluation, and in all aspects of hiring, training,
managing and evaluation of staff.

IV. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Education directly supervises 6 full-time staff members and indirectly supervises 100+
part-time and seasonal staff educators/program facilitators who report directly to the Program
Coordinators & Managers across the department (depending on the season and varying needs of
program schedules). and supports the management of all RMSC Volunteers (100+).

Supervisory responsibilities include the following:

? In collaboration with the Director of Human Resources, the Director of Education develops job
descriptions for full and part-time staff positions to have on ?le for posting when hiring support
is needed based on the needs of the organization

? Leading the interview, hiring & onboarding (to RMSC and position-speci?c) processes for
Education Department staff

? Leading the training, coaching, and ongoing support of the staff who provide customer service,
deliver educational content, and facilitate Educational programs and the additional
responsibilities as outlined in Section II: C above.

? Providing ongoing support and feedback, leading disciplinary matters, and completing annual
staff evaluations

V. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Technology, Equipment, Tools:

? Ability to utilize Microsoft Office products, company email (Gmail) and G-Suite (Gmail, Google Docs,
Google Drive, etc.) products

? Capacity to learn Blackbaud’s Altru database and company payroll system (Paylocity)
? Ability to use business machines such as computer, printer, scanner, calculator, copy machine, and

phone.
? Ability to learn and utilize virtual mediums such as Zoom, Google Meet, etc.

B. Functional Requirements

Communication skills – Ability to read and interpret documents and texts such as scholarly articles,
scienti?c/education journals, STEM-based teaching & learning curricula, ?nancial documents, safety
rules, procedure manuals, and/or operating/maintenance instructions. Ability to write routine reports,

and correspondence (electronic, verbal, in-person), make schedules, share information, and give &
receive feedback effectively. Ability to and/or willingness to learn to speak effectively with groups of
individuals (internal and/or external), with particular emphasis on communication skills with Museum
visitors of all ages and Museum Volunteers, present to peers/co-workers, Board Members, potential
donors, community members and/or the media as requested.

Mathematical skills – Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate ?gures and amounts such as proportions,
percentages, and ratios. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret ?nancial reports

Reasoning ability- Ability to de?ne problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or written form and deal with
several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to exercise signi?cant judgment and make decisions
based on conclusions for which there is little precedent. Cannot necessarily change policies but has
latitude to make decisions within job dimensions and program operations.

C. Physical Activity

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be mobile and move quickly
from one end of campus to another; to manipulate, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands
and arms; lower oneself to lift objects from the ?oor and meet young children at eye-level. The employee
must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Speci?c vision abilities required include close vision,
depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

D. Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is highly variable. While
performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in close quarters with staff/volunteers,
program participants (youth & general public), and/or Museum visitors.

VI. QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience Requirements:

? Master’s Degree AND/OR at least 5-10 years of related experience OR an equivalent combination
of education and experience in Education, Management, Museum Studies, science, technology,
math, engineering (STEM) ?elds, cultural studies or history.

? Minimum of 5 years experience in an informal education, nonpro?t educational organization,
and/or museum, science center, or other cultural institution is required along with an
understanding of the role of education in a museum and best practices in informal education.

? Minimum of 3 years experience supervising personnel (volunteer and staff), large-scale program
and budget development, project management, and planning skills along with an ability to
forecast outcomes and meet deadlines.

? Experience developing and delivering educational and engaging curriculum and/or informal
educational programs

? Experience coordinating logistics, managing multiple schedules, and a passion for project
management and identifying operational systems for efficiencies

? Strong leadership skills preferred; effective problem-solver, motivator, and manager required
? Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Able to work well and collaborate effectively with

diverse audiences including staff, volunteers, educators, funders, sponsors, members, general
public and other constituencies.

? Experience developing and implementing grant-funded programs

? Experience managing and overseeing a large annual budget
? Experience leading, training, and motivating teams
? First Aid, CPR & AED Certi?cation preferred; willingness to complete certi?cation
? Outgoing personality and ability to work with a wide variety of individuals
