Job Summary
Responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of financial information for the college. Provide direct financial and accounting support to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures while providing excellent service to the College dean, other members of the leadership team, departmental administrators, faculty and staff. Additionally a person in this role will, identify and execute on opportunities to add value by optimizing processes and procedures and expanding financial awareness while maintaining College focus on educating healthcare professionals and developing patient-focused programs and systems. Communicates RIT accounting policies and procedures, and completes ad-hoc requests as necessary.
Please note: This position is primarily based on the Henrietta Campus, specifically within the College of Science. On-campus presence is crucial for effective collaboration, access to resources, and engagement with students and faculty. There may be an opportunity for a hybrid schedule in the future once proficiency has been achieved. If a hybrid schedule becomes possible, the maximum number of approved remote workdays will be two per week.
Job Responsibilities
Major Responsibilities:
- Complete and evaluate complex reconciliations and analysis of the College’s financial accounts, including operating, capital, special, discretionary, start-up, internal grants, and overhead project accounts, to ensure transactions are accurate and in compliance with applicable university policies and other regulatory requirements. Resolve issues that range from straightforward to complex, by working with stakeholders at all levels in the partnering College and the Controller’s Office (CTO).
- Perform and maintain analysis and financial forecasting across the organization, including complex compensation-related reconciliations and tracking and reporting of position control numbers (PCN), FTEs, and salaries.
- Oversee the financial management of operating, salary, capital, endowment, gift and discretionary budgets and assist with analysis and forecasting to support strategic planning, ensuring that transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Supervises CIS Sr. Analyst and COS Analyst in managing financial aspects of operating, capital, gift, endowment, special projects discretionary accounts, and externally funded grants and contracts.
- Develop a deep knowledge of the partner College and build positive relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization. Assist key College personnel in articulating their financial and other resource needs (e.g., staffing, capital, budget, etc.) to advance strategic initiatives, including gathering data and proposing how it should be presented.
- Prepare various standard and ad hoc reporting and analysis for management decision-making for multiple stakeholders. Generate more 'value add' from existing products, processes and optimization, through consultancy, financial awareness, managing expectations, and identifying opportunities to add value. Measure and communicate business value realized with leaders of the partnership organization as well as CTO leaders on a periodic basis.
- Design, prepare and present financial information, including visualizations, to the College dean and other members of the leadership team to assist with ongoing management and decision making regarding the College’s finances and operations. Identify and communicate relevant trends through sophisticated analysis, dashboards, and metrics using a variety of advanced technical tools. Measure and communicate benefits of initiatives with College and CTO leadership teams on a regular basis.
- Participate in/complete special projects as requested by management.
- Participate in 40 hours of training/professional develop annually (or a pro rata amount based on standard working hours). Training must be applicable to the employee’s role within the Controller’s Division with the intent of enhancing overall knowledge as well as the specific skills, whether functional or technical, required to perform successfully in the position.
Sponsored Programs
Work with the Sponsored Programs Accounting (SPA) representative to monitor grants and contracts to ensure proper recording of transactions in accordance with RIT guidelines, applicable government regulations and award terms and conditions, including cost share commitments. Attend Project Initiation Meetings (PIM), and monthly or quarterly meetings with Principal Investigators and SPA representative, as needed. Serve as the liaison between Sponsored Research Services (SRS), SPA, and partner organization. Provides support to Principal Investigators (PIs) and ensures accurate and complete financial information for the College of Science.
Required Qualifications
- BS degree in accounting or related field
- Seven to eight years’ experience in general accounting and financial reporting required with preference given to applicants with experience in accounting/financial reporting in a higher education setting.
- Experience working with an enterprise-wide financial system required with advanced PC skills and extensive experience with MS Office
- Financial planning and analysis skills are critical to the success of this position.
- Must possess high integrity to provide ethical and consistent leadership in all areas of COS operations.
- Must possess strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, high integrity, and demonstrate aptitude and desire to work as a member of a team and a proven record of being proactive in the performance of all job-related functions.
Preferred Qualifications
MBA or MS in a related discipline with a professional certification (CPA, CMA, or CIA) preferred. Management/Supervisor experience is strongly preferred.
