Description This is a technical position in the City of Rochester Animal Services. The employee in this position performs tasks to assist and support veterinarians with a variety of animal health activities such as: medical examinations, surgical procedures, and treatments. Direct supervision is received from a licensed veterinarian, shelter management or Veterinary Technician. Related duties are performed as required.

This position is a traineeship lasting (24) twenty-four months. Upon completion of the traineeship the incumbent’s supervisor will determine if the incumbent has developed the requisite full performance knowledge, skills, and abilities for the title of Veterinary Technician. If the incumbent has, they will automatically transition into that title on a permanent basis. If the incumbent’s performance does not reflect the requisite full performance knowledge, skills, and abilities at the end of the traineeship or anytime during, the traineeship will be terminated.

This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.

A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.


  • Cleans, disinfects, and organizes surgical suite and clinic;
  • Assists with surgical sterilization and other veterinary procedures as directed by a licensed veterinarian;
  • Maintains inventory of veterinary supplies;
  • Assists in the examination of animals to diagnosis injuries or illness;
  • Assists and may administer medications, vaccinations, and anesthesia drugs;
  • Maintains drug logs;
  • Prepares animals for surgery;
  • Advises and educates animal owners on future care and treatment;
  • Prepares instruments, equipment, and materials for surgery;
  • Performs other veterinary and animal care responsibilities as directed by a licensed veterinarian, Veterinary Technician or shelter management;
  • Operates a vehicle to transport animals and pick up shelter supplies.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment with this job)
  1. Possession of a valid Veterinary Technician License issued by the NYS Education Department's Division of Professional Licensing Services.
  2. Possession of a valid New York State Class D driver’s license at time of appointment.
