Tenure track Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Liberal Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor beginning in August 2025. Prospective candidates are expected to have earned a Ph.D. in either Sociology, Anthropology, or a related field (in hand by August 1, 2025).
Our department has strengths in the areas of health, social inequalities, race & ethnicity, and global migration. We seek candidates with expertise in either environment/climate change or disability/design, and who can thereby enhance our existing strengths. We welcome all methodologies, but particularly encourage those employing critical, community based or mixed methods approaches to apply.
Successful candidates will demonstrate strong potential for research and scholarship and a commitment to student success. Candidates should consider opportunities for collaborations with other RIT academic programs or community organizations. Candidates should demonstrate a dedication to excellence in teaching and mentoring liberal arts at the undergraduate level at a technology-oriented institution. Applicants must be able to teach introductory and upper division courses in sociology or anthropology.

Department/College Description
THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is a vibrant, interdisciplinary department, whose faculty members share a strong commitment to global justice, human rights, and sustainable futures. This commitment builds on engaged scholarship and coursework in the following three areas: social inequalities, cultural diversity, and globalization. While the investigative focus of each faculty member is distinct and draws on a different body of research or theory, the department’s inquiries into inequality, diversity, and globalization intersect and crosscut disciplinary boundaries.
THE COLLEGE:
The College of Liberal Arts (COLA) is central to the university’s ability to provide excellent and well- rounded undergraduate and professionally oriented graduate education. Over the past decade, COLA has grown in research, development of creative new programs, and the recruitment of faculty who are excellent scholars and educators. The college is poised to be a key player in the university’s ambitious plans for new creative programs, research growth, and increased public engagement while continuing to provide students an invaluable grounding in the liberal arts.
The college is home to 8 departments in addition to Sociology and Anthropology (Criminal Justice, Economics, English, History, Modern Languages and Cultures, Philosophy, Psychology, and Public Policy); two schools (Communication, Performing Arts); and several interdisciplinary programs. COLA enrolls nearly 600 undergraduate majors across 16 programs, over 70 graduate students in five master’s programs, and is responsible for over a quarter of the core curriculum classes on campus. Required Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. (in hand by August 2025) in Sociology, Anthropology, or a related field.
- The ability to teach introductory and upper division courses in sociology or anthropology.
- A commitment to teaching undergraduates students and their success.
- The potential for excellence in teaching and research in either environment/climate change or disability/design.
- Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
