Job Title: Livery Rental Assistant
Location: Genesee Waterways Center & Lock 32 Whitewater Park (Elmwood Ave., Rochester NY and Lock 32, Pittsford NY)
Employment Type: Part-time; Seasonal (at minimum May-late August, strongly prefer May - through mid-October; includes some training in April)
Position Overview: Genesee Waterways Center seeks enthusiastic and reliable Livery Rental Assistants to join our team for the summer season. This role involves assisting customers with the rental of watercraft that include flatwater and whitewater kayaks, and canoes. You will provide excellent customer service, ensure the safe operation of equipment, and facilitate outdoor recreation on local waterways. With two locations available—one on Elmwood Ave in Rochester and one at Lock 32 in Pittsford, NY (which features whitewater)—you’ll have the opportunity to work at either one or both locations.
This is a hands-on, outdoor position, perfect for someone passionate about outdoor recreation and water sports. Key Responsibilities:
Greet customers and provide them with information about available rentals, safety protocols, and watercraft options. Including selecting the appropriate equipment for their skill level and desired activity.
Conduct brief safety orientations and provide instructions on the use of watercraft and the water way “trails.”
Handle rental transactions, including collecting payments and processing rentals using the point-of-sale system.
Inspect and maintain watercraft, paddles, life jackets, and other equipment before and after each use to ensure they are in good working condition.
Assist with carrying and staging equipment down to and up from the dock and assist customers in and out of boats, ensuring their safety and comfort.
Monitor water conditions and be vigilant for safety hazards, providing guidance to customers as needed.
Maintain a clean and organized rental area, including staging areas for watercraft and equipment.
Assist with the setup and breakdown of equipment at the beginning and end of the rental day.
Ensure that all customers follow Genesee Waterways Center’s rules and safety guidelines while on the water.
Assist with other livery-related tasks as needed, including maintaining the facility and helping with events or programming.
Qualifications:
Must be at least 16 years of age with a valid worker’s permit.
Previous experience in customer service, outdoor recreation, or related fields is preferred.
Knowledge of watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards is a plus, though training will be provided.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor environment. Including many hours on your feet.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Basic knowledge of safety procedures on the water. Must be able to swim.
Must be physically fit to lift and move watercraft and other equipment. Including ability to carry at least 35 pounds, repeatedly.
CPR and First Aid certification is a plus.
Reliable and punctual, with a positive and customer-focused attitude.
Locations:
Applicants may choose to work at one location or be available to work across both locations, depending on availability and needs: Genesee Waterways Center at 149 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY (Located in Genesee Valley Park) or Lock 32, Pittsford, NY (Whitewater location)
Work Schedule:
Seasonal position from May to October.
Must be available to work weekends.
Flexible hours with varying shifts depending on demand, weather conditions, and program schedules.
Compensation: Hourly rate based on experience. Starting rate is $15.50/hour.
