Description The main responsibilities of this position are to diagnose and document vehicle and equipment problems and to coordinate preventative maintenance and repair activities between the Central Vehicle Maintenance Facility (CVMF) and user departments. The incumbent makes the initial diagnosis of equipment problems, prepares and processes work orders, schedules preventative maintenance and repairs, acts as a liaison between the CVMF and user departments, and assists in the maintenance of the computerized fleet information management system. Fleet Service Writers exercise some independent judgment in solving work problems and receive general supervision from a manager. The position may direct the work of a clerical staff as assigned. Performs related work as required.

  • Diagnoses vehicle problems by inspection, operator interview, test driving, and reviewing past vehicle history and warranty data;
  • Prepares work orders for vehicle and equipment repair and warranty work;
  • Prepares preventative maintenance schedules according to vehicle and staffing availability;
  • Notifies customers via written and oral communications when vehicles are ready for pickup, and when preventative maintenance and motor vehicle inspections are past due;
  • Arranges work with outside vendors and maintains records of these services;
  • Dispatches road service trucks;
  • Performs tasks associated with vehicle commissioning and disposal processes;
  • Assists in the maintenance of the fleet management information system; monitors and analyzes data; updates fleet repair and inventory records; monitors historical records on vehicles and equipment;
  • Researches information and prepares performance reports;
  • Maintains parking facilities as to organization and vehicle identification;
  • Plans and schedules work in the absence of the supervisor;
  • May transport vehicles to vendor and other locations.
High School diploma or GED PLUS
  1. Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered light and heavy motor equipment. OR
  2. Four (4) years of experience writing repair or service orders for an automotive repair shop licensed by New York State.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Possession of a valid New York State Class D driver’s license at the time of appointment.
  2. Possession of a valid New York State Class B Commercial driver’s license within 6 months of appointment. Incumbents must maintain this license throughout their employment.

*Candidates who expect to receive this degree or diploma by August 1, 2025, may participate in the examination. If successful on the examination, you will not be certified for appointment until you have submitted proof of completion of the requirements to the City of Rochester Examination Administration Unit. Proof must be submitted no later than 2 (two) months after the completion of your degree or diploma; failure to do so will result in the removal of your name from this list.

Maintenance and Repair of Motor Vehicles:

These questions test for knowledge of the operating characteristics of the various mechanical and electrical components of motor vehicles and diagnostic practices involved in the maintenance and repair of these components.

Operation, Maintenance, and Repair of Automotive, Truck, and Heavy Highway Maintenance Equipment:

These questions test for knowledge of the operating characteristics of various components of automotive and heavy motor vehicle equipment and the proper maintenance and repair procedures to use on this equipment.

Tools and Test Equipment Used in the Maintenance of Automotive Equipment:

These questions test for knowledge of the correct procedures to use when checking, maintaining, and repairing automotive equipment, including the proper and safe use of various tools, instruments, circuit testers, and similar types of mechanical and electrical test and repair equipment.

Maintenance and Repair of Mechanically and Electronically Controlled Internal Combustion Engines:

These questions test for knowledge of the technical operating characteristics of internal combustion engines, including the ability to troubleshoot symptoms of poor operation and to diagnose and repair typical mechanical or electrical system problems, including computer-controlled systems.
