Job Responsibilities

St. John Fisher University invites applications for the full-time, 12-month position of Instructional Designer. This dynamic role supports faculty and subject matter experts (SMEs) in creating innovative, engaging, and effective learning experiences for both credit-bearing and non-credit offerings. The Instructional Designer will collaborate with campus partners to design and develop courses and modules for traditional in-person courses, online programs, and continuing education offerings. In addition to content development, the position will include consulting with faculty on course design, teaching strategies, and best practices in pedagogy through one-on-one consultations, workshops, and DePeters Family Center signature professional development experiences. The Instructional Designer will play a key role in incorporating emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), into the instructional design process. They will leverage AI tools to streamline course development, generate personalized learning experiences, and create dynamic, interactive course content. Furthermore, the Instructional Designer will lead faculty training on the effective use of AI tools to enhance course design, improve instructional efficiency, and promote student engagement across diverse teaching modalities. The ideal candidate will be a skilled instructional design professional with expertise in both the technical aspects of creating digital learning materials and the interpersonal skills needed to guide faculty in enhancing their teaching effectiveness. The Instructional Designer, working in collaboration with faculty and administration, will be specifically responsible for the following: (40-50%) Non-Credit Course Development Lead the development of interactive online courseware modules and self-paced learning experiences in collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs) for non-credit programs, including continuing and executive education offerings. Design and develop high-quality, engaging learning materials tailored to the unique needs of non-credit learners. Incorporate innovative tools, media, and instructional strategies, including AI-driven solutions, to enhance learner engagement and interactivity in non-credit learning experiences. Serve as a liaison between campus continuing education program owners, the Center and the Office of Information Technology to ensure the non-credit LMS supports the diverse needs of current and future program offerings. (25-35%) Faculty Support and Training for Credit-Bearing Courses Consult with faculty on course design, teaching strategies, and the integration of instructional technologies to improve learning outcomes in credit-bearing programs. Develop and deliver training sessions and workshops, including the DePeters Family Center’s signature professional development event, Fundamentals of Online Teaching, to equip faculty with the skills to design and deliver effective online and hybrid courses. Collaborate with faculty to design interactive learning objects, assessments, and activities that align with best practices in pedagogy and learning design. Provide targeted support for faculty using AI tools to streamline course development, personalize learning experiences, and enhance student engagement. (10-15%) Tracking of Credit and Non-Credit Programs and Learners Maintain detailed records of faculty participation in training programs, including the Fundamentals of Online Teaching and other professional development initiatives, ensuring an accurate account of faculty certified to teach online. Track and analyze data on non-credit programs, including the number of offerings, enrollment figures, learner demographics, and completion rates. Monitor engagement with faculty and subject matter experts (SMEs) to evaluate the reach and effectiveness of consultations, workshops, and support services. Generate regular reports on the impact of credit-bearing and non-credit programs, highlighting trends, successes, and areas for improvement. Collaborate with the Center’s leadership to leverage data in strategic decision-making, ensuring programs align with institutional goals and learner needs. (5%) Staying Current and Campus Presence Stay current with emerging technologies, including AI and other innovative tools, and recommend solutions to enhance the teaching and learning environment. Maintain an active presence on campus as a pedagogical resource for faculty and staff.

Education / Experience

3-5 years of experience developing online learning courseware and teaching online is preferred. Qualified applicants will hold a master’s degree or higher, preferably in instructional design, educational technology, instructional technology, education, human-computer interaction, or a related degree.

Competencies / Skills

The successful candidate will: Demonstrate expertise in course and learning management systems (e.g., Brightspace and Thought Industries), multimedia authoring tools (e.g., Articulate 360, Camtasia, Adobe Creative Suite), web conferencing technology, and AI-driven content development tools (e.g., AI-powered media generators, text-to-speech tools, or AI-based analytics platforms). Possess strong knowledge of instructional design theory, adult learning principles, and effective teaching strategies. Be proficient in HTML5/CSS and multimedia design, with a preference for experience in graphic design, animation, gamification elements, and the use of AI to automate or augment multimedia creation. Exhibit strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities effectively. Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate across diverse teams. Be comfortable delivering training and workshops in both online and face-to-face settings. Show familiarity with emerging technologies that enhance teaching and learning environments.
