This is non-technical work involving the performance of routine screening tests and procedures in order to assist professional medical staff. Incumbents may be responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients in a clinical setting requiring use of universal precautions. Employees are thus placed in frequent, recurring public contact situations and must be able to function both efficiently and courteously. Incumbents may be responsible for clinic set up, organizing supplies, maintaining supply inventory, and pulling files/records. Employees may be required to complete clinical forms, organize medical records, straighten exam rooms, and collect monies according to bill prepared by a Registered Professional Nurse. Work is performed under close supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or other higher level clinical employee. This position does not involve any supervisory responsibilities. Does related work as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Collects blood specimen by means of a finger prick;
  • Performs dipstick analysis on urine samples for protein and sugar;
  • Measures patient's height, weight, and head circumference;
  • May operate automatic analyzing machines and record readings;
  • Performs a variety of duties to assure that the clinical facility is clean, sanitary, orderly and properly supplied;
  • Performs routine related clerical duties including the filing of test results, reports and preparation of records;
  • Answers phone and schedules appointments as needed;
  • Performs general clerical duties (type rolodex cards on new patients, record and file lab reports, maintain statistical data, complete CVR's for computer printout and filing);
  • Conducts full inventory as required;
  • Notifies appropriate staff to order supplies as needed;
  • May take blood pressure, pulse, respiration and temperature with supervision;
  • Performs basic data entry;
  • Transports equipment and supplies from main office to satellite sites; and
  • Performs other related duties.

  1. Ability to perform simple repetitive tests with accuracy;
  2. Ability to acquire a working knowledge of basic principles and techniques of simple laboratory procedures and equipment maintenance;
  3. Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures;
  4. Ability to lift equipment and clinical supplies up to 25 lbs.;
  5. Ability to get along well with others and to secure cooperation of patients;
  6. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  7. Organizational skills;
  8. Normal color perception;
  9. Basic computer skills;
  10. Flexibility;
  11. Exceptional tact and courtesy; and
  12. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Typical Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a general equivalency diploma.

Supplemental Information

  1. Must possess a valid New York State driver's license.
  2. Appropriate licensure must be maintained throughout employment.
  3. A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.
  4. Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes.

NOTE: Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position. However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
