Description
A Seasonal Laborer is a temporary position within the County service.
Performs routine manual work. This is routine manual work requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous tasks. Laborers usually work under continuing supervision or their activities are subject to frequent inspection. Does related work as required.
Examples of Duties
- Operates power driven tools and equipment such as saws, compressors, drills, mixers, pumps, mowers and string trimmers;
- Performs general clean-up work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass, and weeds, shoveling snow, and assisting in collection of rubbish and litter from lands and facilities.
- May assist with the maintenance or construction of roads, streets, utility and drainage systems by digging and backfilling trenches, spreading asphalt, sand and gravel;
- May assist skilled and semi-skilled workers by hauling materials, assisting with work set up, lifting, holding things in place, and performing other duties of a similar character;
- Uses hand tools such as shovels, scythes, forks and rakes in grounds maintenance and beautification work;
- May assist in the preparation, laying out and maintenance of athletic fields and areas designed for beautification by clearing, grading, reseeding, weeding and lining;
- Loads and unloads trucks and stacks materials and supplies;
- May act as flag person on highway jobs and/or direct trucks at loading and unloading sites;
- Assists in erecting or assembling snow fences, barricades, picnic tables and recreation equipment;
- May perform general maintenance and cleaning activities;
- May operate light trucks and equipment; and
- Performs other related duties.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Willingness to perform routine manual tasks; ability to lift heavy weights; ability to follow simple oral or written instructions; ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and bending; willingness to work under all weather conditions; physical endurance; sobriety; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Supplemental Information
Applicants must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds and possess a valid Class D New York State driver’s license at time of application and appointment. Must maintain such license in good standing throughout employment.
NOTE: Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position. However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
